A rather bleak assessment, I'm afraid. Nearly ten years on, I still live in hope that my pessimistic view as expressed in this article will yet be proved wrong. Fortunately, there are some encouraging signs of life in the body spritual of the northern tradition; but, there's still a long way to go before we can say that it's in rude good health. Much more work needs to be done. As The Norroena Society reminds us: 'Do you know who will be at the forefront of this revolution? You. That's right, every single member of Odin's Nation is being called upon to play his or her role in this, for without the backing of our folk, progress is impossibility. The only thing that will be required of you is an open mind and a dedication to move our faith forward'. Well, certainly, if we don't achieve this for ourselves then nobody else will do so on our behalf! Don't forget that one of the great tests of faith is to continue to labour tirelessly at something unrewarded.

Keep at it.

Hi Scott,

If you read the Rune Primer carefully, you will see that it is not strictly reconstructionist at all. It clearly says there is nothing wrong with finding your own path. It It merely says that if we have good verified sources, these are the best place to start, as it gives us all a sound common starting point. Where you go from there is up to you. It even criticises strict reconstruction as an impossible dream, as sources are incomplete.

What it urges against is the complete fantasies of some New Age gurus being taken as historical fact.

I wanted to congratulate you on excellent articles. I have long had a hard time dealing with the "strict reconstructionist" vs. Personal Gnostic battle that seems to exist within the Northern European path. As I look at my shelf, I found myself looking at books that a very strict (The Rune Primer being one), while others that certainly stretch based upon personal gnosis and experience. (Leaves of Yggdrasil being what I would consider and example of a reasonable approach based upon personal gnosis).

As I grow in the tradition (or whatever one wants to call it) and carve out my own path, I'm careful to say that "some of this is historical, and I'll reference it" and other parts are based upon personal gnosis and modern traditions.

If we could learn to accept that melding these two together isn't necessarily a bad thing, I believe the path would improve.
