I have been singing since I could speak, probably before. I have always been in awe of how vocalizing transcends all physical space, how a tone can call tears, raise courage, penetrate to the bone. I had much formal training in my youth, but it has been within the last ten years that I have started to explore the magical use of song. Your notes and insights into your own experience are timely and reassuring, and I appreciate that you shared them here.

Thank you,
Borea

When I was in the army, I found that even a silent chant was enough to keep the breath even without focusing on it. As soon as you lose that flow, you start gasping. Similarly, in a working, the chant keeps the mind on track without being forced or self conscious about it.

Singing absolutely works to keep soldiers moving on a long march. On a hot day, with a heavy load, nothing else comes close.

5km in 20 minutes is unheard of, though. To put it in perspective, the Commando Regiment used to have a 5km test that had to be RUN in 23 minutes or less! To walk it in that time is unbelievable. Talk about magic.

My favorite marching song was always "Three German Officers".
